About the Author

Patrick M. Oliver is founder of the Say It Loud! Readers and Writers literary arts program for children, youth and adults. Oliver is a literary consultant, program manager, radio host, youth advocate and social change agent. He was senior subcontract administrator in the defense industry and program director for the Open Book Program a city-wide reading program for children and youth in Chicago, IL. Mr. Oliver was Director of Sales and Marketing at Third World Press (Chicago. IL). As a consultant he has developed in-school and after-school programs for schools and organizations throughout the United States.

My forthcoming book, Notes from a Literary Activist, includes twelve chapters on the importance of activism to promote the various forms of literacy in our communities. These concise essays are a series of relevant notes, anecdotes and observations from my experience of over twenty years of work with programs that encourage reading in our communities.  Also includes original cover illustration by world-renowned artist Frank Frazier, photographs from photographer Jamel Shabazz, fiction and non-fiction interludes from scholars and images of historical movements. Notes from a Literary Activist will be available early 2013.

This book will surely be valuable to educators, youth advocates and social practitioners as an inspiration to young people who may or may not consider themselves ‘readers’. It may prove a useful resource—some of the contributors identify important programs and opportunities for the curious.” --From the Afterword, Useni Eugene Perkins, author Harvesting New Generations

Testimonials

"Mr. Oliver your presentation was informative, reflective of your vast experience and knowledge about books and literacy programs, particularly those for the young adult and teen reader.  Your remarks were particularly useful because we are beginning a literacy project for male students in middle school”. - Juanita G. Bass, Associate Professor of English, Fri Communications Scholar, LeMoyne-Owen College
